The Professor gives his take on a few international stories he thinks are of much greater significance this week than the droll domestic drivel that is forced upon the American public on a daily basis. This week:
...Mexican billionaire loses $8 billion
...major drought in Eastern Africa
...Ukrainian politician Yulia Tymoshenko arrested
...Hugo Chavez back in Cuba for chemo…which may mark the end of his significance in Latin American affairs?

Turkish Tantrum Rant: Military Men Quit En Masse

Military titillation in Turkey? All of the top generals in charge of all the major military divisions, including the Chief of Staff in charge of them all, just quit their jobs last Friday in a sign of protest against investigative actions of the government. Is the country on the brink of collapse or a coup or civil war? Not at all!  Quite the contrary! What is happening right now in Turkey is the product of a decades long-transition to a full-on western style democracy, that at the same time is possibly problematic for them to maintain their secular state. In this spiel, the Professor explains just a bit of background into this Turkish situation, what is means for now, and for the future of Turkey, NATO, and the wider world.

Rare Earth Elements Rant

As decided on by the awesome Plaid Viewers, this Professor rant outlines what ‘Rare Earth’ elements are, what industries they are crucial to, how the Chinese completely cornered the world market on them, and how this has give China tremendous political leverage over countries as a result. The Prof also points out repercussions of this Chinese “cheating” the capitalist system in terms of new mining operations globally, possible moves by governments to be more involved in national industries…and even the possible new sovereign state of Greenland? Say what? Yep. It’s all in there!

The Last Launch: Decline of the US Space Program Rant

As decided on by the awesome Plaid Viewers, this Professor rant outlines some of the reasons that Americans should be greatly concerned about the last launch of the Endeavor which is signaling the demise of the US Space Program…and effectively the end of US leadership in the world for all things space-oriented. The Asian Space Race is on, and the US isn’t even going to be at the game, and this has significant economic, political, and nationalistic repercussions for the future of this fair country…
